Making the 5.7×28mm Affordable – New 45gr RN Bullets
The 5.7×28mm has always been one of those calibers that shooters either love or avoid completely – not because it’s bad, but because it’s expensive. Ammo prices for it are sky-high, and reloading hasn’t always been much better. That’s exactly why I decided to bring out our own 5.7×28mm 45gr RN bullets (QTY:500) – to make this little speedster affordable.
With these bullets, running the 5.7×28mm suddenly makes more sense. In fact, it works out cheaper than most handgun calibers. And the best part? They’re designed to handle proper velocity – up to 1800fps – so you’re not losing performance while saving money.
A Few Things You Need to Know
Now, if you’re reloading this caliber for the first time, there are some quirks you’ll need to work with.
-
Case necks need to be expanded before seating. If you don’t, the bullet will swage down and you’ll lose accuracy.
-
You’ll also want to flare the case mouth slightly, just enough so that the coating on the bullet doesn’t get damaged when seating.
-
Done right, these bullets run beautifully in the 5.7×28mm.
My Load Data
For anyone interested, here’s the load I personally run with these bullets. It’s been consistent, accurate, and runs without any issues.
-
Powder: Lovex D037.1
-
Charge: 6.0gr
-
COL: 38mm
-
Velocity: around 1600fps
This load has given me excellent accuracy and smooth cycling.
The One Big Catch – Brass Coating
If you’ve played with 5.7 brass before, you’ll know the cases have a special coating. That coating is the only reason the round cycles as reliably as it does. The problem is that the coating comes off if you clean the brass too aggressively (especially wet tumbling). Once it’s gone, expect stuck cases or ejection failures.
The fix? A simple trick I’ve been using: spray the completed rounds with a light coat of silicone spray, then wipe off the excess with a cloth. This restores that “slip” the brass needs and gets rid of the cycling issues.
Final Word
Reloading always comes with risks, so I need to be clear here – use this information at your own risk. This is simply the load and method I’ve had success with, and it’s worked extremely well for me.
That said, these new 45gr RN bullets have honestly made the 5.7×28mm not just practical, but affordable. If you’ve been holding off because of cost, now’s your chance to really enjoy what this caliber can do.
